An honest guide to what your options actually are - decriminalized cities, what to avoid online, and how to tell a real source from a fake one.
“Where to buy magic mushrooms” does not have one clean answer, and anybody who tells you it does is selling you something. What follows is the honest version.
The legal landscape, briefly
Psilocybin is a Schedule I controlled substance federally. It is not legal at the federal level and has not been legalized at the state level in Michigan.
What has happened in a handful of cities is local decriminalization: city councils have passed measures directing local police to treat entheogenic plants and fungi as the lowest law enforcement priority. That is not the same as legalization. It is a change in enforcement priority.

Michigan is unusual. Four of the cities with active storefront retail are in southeast Michigan. That is not an accident. It is the result of sustained local advocacy.
Where NOT to buy magic mushrooms
Amazon, Etsy, and general marketplaces
Anything sold there as “psilocybin” is not psilocybin. Products marketed as “mushroom gummies” on those platforms contain either non-psychoactive functional mushrooms (lion’s mane, reishi) or, in a documented and dangerous pattern, undisclosed synthetic compounds. The FDA has issued recalls in this category over serious adverse reactions.
Random online sellers that ship to your door
Options here range from “actual scam that takes your money” to “actual product that creates real legal exposure for you.” The good end of that range is still not good. There is no verification, no lab testing, no accountability, and no recourse when you buy magic mushrooms from an unverified online source.
Gas stations and smoke shops selling “mushroom” gummies
Look at the label. If it does not name a strain or state a psilocybin content, it is not psilocybin. It is one of the synthetic-blend products mentioned above. Some of them have caused hospitalizations.
Anyone who will not tell you what is in it
This is the single best filter. A legitimate source can tell you the strain, the potency, and where it came from. Someone who cannot is not someone you should be buying from.
How to buy magic mushrooms safely
- Buy in person, from a physical storefront. This is the largest single factor separating safe from unsafe.
- Buy in a city that has passed local decriminalization – the ones listed above.
- Ask what is in it. Strain, dose, source. If they cannot answer, leave.
- Bring photo ID. You need to be 21 or older.
- Bring cash. Most storefronts, including ours, are cash only.
- Start low. A first dose is not the place to prove anything.
