What Is a Mushroom Dispensary?

A mushroom dispensary is a retail storefront that sells psilocybin mushrooms and mushroom products to adults. In practice, mushroom dispensaries operate in a small number of cities that have passed local measures deprioritizing enforcement against entheogenic plants and fungi — Ann Arbor being one of the first in the United States.

A mushroom dispensary is not the same thing as a cannabis dispensary, and the difference is not cosmetic. It is legal, and it is worth understanding before you walk into one.

Mushroom dispensary vs. cannabis dispensary

A cannabis dispensary in Michigan operates under a state licensing framework. The state issues licenses, inspects facilities, tracks inventory, and regulates the product. Cannabis is legal under Michigan law.

A mushroom dispensary does not have that. There is no state license for selling psilocybin in Michigan, because psilocybin is not legal under Michigan law. What exists instead is local decriminalization — a city-level policy directing local police to treat entheogenic plants and fungi as the lowest law enforcement priority.

That is a meaningfully different legal footing, and any mushroom dispensary that tells you otherwise is misleading you.

Are mushroom dispensaries legal?

The honest answer is: it is complicated, and nobody should tell you it is simple.

• Federally, psilocybin is a Schedule I controlled substance. That has not changed.
• In Michigan, psilocybin is not legalized under state law.
• In Ann Arbor, City Council Resolution R-20-362 (September 2020) made the investigation and arrest of individuals for possessing, cultivating, or distributing entheogenic plants and fungi the lowest law enforcement priority in the city. Washtenaw County’s prosecutor has adopted a comparable stance.
• Detroit, Ferndale, and Hazel Park have passed similar local measures.

Decriminalization is not legalization. It changes enforcement priority; it does not authorize possession, sale, or use. Adults make their own informed decisions here, and they should make them with the actual facts.

What a mushroom dispensary sells

• Dried mushrooms — whole psilocybin mushrooms, sold by strain. Potency varies significantly between strains. See our dried selection.

• Drink enhancers — psilocybin vials to add to a beverage.

What to expect on your first mushroom dispensary visit

You will be asked for ID. You need to be 21 or older with valid government-issued photo identification — no exceptions, no arguments.

Most mushroom dispensaries, including ours, are cash only. We have an ATM on site.

There is no appointment and no membership. You walk in, you talk to someone, you look at what is on the menu, you ask questions. Good staff will ask what you have done before and what you are looking for, and will steer you toward something appropriate rather than something expensive.

If you have never done this before, say so. That is the most useful thing you can tell the person behind the counter.

How to tell a legitimate mushroom dispensary from one that is not

Not every shop selling mushrooms is doing it well. Some things to look for:

• A real storefront. Someone accountable, at a fixed address, during posted hours.
• Named strains and stated potency. If they cannot tell you what strain it is or how strong it is, they do not know what they are selling.
• Lab testing. Ask. A real answer is a good sign.
• No synthetics. Products sold as “mushrooms” that contain undisclosed synthetic compounds are a genuine and documented problem in this market, and the FDA has recalled products over it.
• Staff who can talk about dosing. Not just what is cheapest. What is right for you.
• No pressure. A mushroom dispensary that pushes a bigger dose on a first-timer is a shop to leave.
